Heat pumps extract heat from the ground, air, water or existing process cooling systems and upgrade this heat to the temperature where it can be used in the site heating or manufacturing process. Advances in technology means higher temperatures are now achievable which can be widely applied to industry (e.g. pasteurisation) or commercial installations (e.g. heating and cooling offices).
The attraction of a heat pump is its efficiency. For every kW of power used the heat pump delivers circa 3 kW of heating and potentially 3 kW of cooling. The ratio of output to input is the Coefficient Of Performance and is typically 3 or 300% for heating and similar for cooling. If cooling and heating can be delivered simultaneously in excess of 600% efficiency is possible.
As the grid electricity that feeds a heat pump declines in carbon intensity over time, the carbon attributable to the thermal output from the heat pump similarly reduces. The addition of Solar PV to power the heat pump system further enhances the financial sustainability of this technology.
